Roundtable Community Participation Stipend

The Community Participation Stipend is a pilot project funded by a Duwamish River Opportunity Fund (DROF) award from the City of Seattle to Triangle Associates. (Learn more about the Duwamish River Opportunity Fund here.) EPA is not providing funding for the compensation of Roundtable participants, childcare, or food at meetings, nor is EPA funding Triangle’s work to obtain or maintain funding for those items. The Stipend will be distributed to community members by Triangle Associates and is intended only to support the Lower Duwamish Waterway (LDW) Roundtable, which is part of the Superfund Cleanup process. Funds awarded to community members are limited to the life cycle of the DROF grant award only and are not renewable beyond 2019.

What is the Community Participation Stipend?

The LDW Community Participation Stipend enables community members to participate at Roundtable meetings, who otherwise would not be able to participate, by providing compensation for their time and preparation. The funding amount includes the cost of travel and parking, time to prepare for, attend, and/or participate in follow-up for up to two Roundtable meetings (2.5 hours each), and the cost of printing materials. The Stipend also provides funding for meeting refreshments, childcare, and interpretation/translation support to stipend recipients between meetings.

Why a Community Participation Stipend?

The intention of the Community Participation Stipends is to leverage involvement and knowledge from Duwamish Valley communities, which include low-income residents and/or residents of color who face disproportionate environmental and health burdens as a result of where they live. Providing a stipend makes the process more inclusive and equitable. It acknowledges that most Roundtable participants are compensated for their participation, either through payroll or a grant, for example, while others, such as community members, are not. It supports the removal of barriers to participation for community members.
